Sonder Lines

Sonder Lines

Emily and Rachel, a spirited duo of Australian cellists whose musical journey began in a serendipitous encounter within the intimate ambiance of a candlelit church during a community music gathering, sometime in late May 2023. Amidst the harmonious chords and shared laughter, a musical synergy sparked between them.

Fuelled by their shared ethos of ‘coddiwomple' a term embodying purposeful wandering towards a nebulous destination, their cellos interweave melodies with both intention and spontaneity. While grounded in classical training, their sonic tapestries embody a contemporary fusion, blending elements of contemporary musical styles with classical genres.

Whether interlacing their melodies with the sounds of nature, birds, wind and trees, or adding some visual artistry into their performances, Emily and Rachel craft their live performances to create an immersive sonic experience.

Emily's black carbon fibre cello, affectionately named Persephone, resonates with modernity alongside Rachel's vintage German companion, Evelyn, adding timeless elegance to the sound palette.

Together, they form the duo ‘Sonder Lines’, to coddiwomple and captivate with their evocative performances of duelling cellos.

One of our first cello songs we created together, we call this piece Wing & Whisper. We recorded this live at the Fremantle Arts Centre in Walyalup (Fremantle) on Whadjuk Nyoongar Boodjar. This piece is layered with samples of Australian native bird songs and set to visuals of Australian birds.
Visuals and sound by Emily.
